I write code — and prompts and skills, these days — and try to make things look decent along the way. The work I like best is equal parts technical and creative.

I’m a full-stack engineer, ten years and counting, mostly building for the web with Node.js, TypeScript and React.
Away from the keyboard I’m usually with my wife and Luna, our Pomeranian, who has the best temperament in the house.
The journey so far
I grew up when kids still played outside, and I was outdoorsy even by those standards — climbing trees, mucking about in the vlei. I drew a lot too, mostly things out of my head. Then in my early teens my father bought me a computer, and that was that.
Since then I’ve done programming, graphic design, 3D modelling, video editing and compositing, and level design for games. These days it’s almost all software engineering, but the rest keeps turning out to be useful.
A few of my favourite things
Photography. I shoot with whatever is on hand, smartphone or borrowed DSLR. It’s my favourite kind of work in miniature: creativity and technical knowledge, experiment and a bit of luck.
Generative art. I like seeing how far each new generation of image models can be pushed. My hope is that they end up improving creative work across a lot of industries, and making more of it rather than less.
Linux. I picked up Linux and terminal workflows at work and never went back. A whole class of jobs is better served by a CLI or TUI than a GUI, and once you’ve used a tiling window manager, dragging windows around by hand feels archaic.
Games. cRPGs above all. Imagination, skill, narrative, exploration and characters worth remembering — no other medium puts them together quite like that.

Growing up all over South Africa, a long wander through Turkey, a Mediterranean cruise, then a move to Portugal. An incomplete list of places I've lived in, travelled to, or passed through on the way somewhere else — with plenty still to add.
